I am thinking about taking a late 90s Jeep Cherokee and putting a diesel motor and drivetrain in it. Any suggestions on a diesel motor? Thinking a 4 cylinder motor. Or there may be a better motor cylinder configuration.

This truck is going to be like a trail truck. Although not lifted high or super big tires. It will have lots of highway miles put on it. A range of about 300+ miles is needed (with 1/4 fuel remaining). This would be for the mountain adventures in the state of Washington.

    Thank you,
    Mike

I would also think about the transmission that you will put with the engine. Would you like a manual or auto? The other speed bump would be if the transfer case can be mounted on the new transmission on the driver side of the Cherokee. Your Cherokee's front drive shaft is on the driverside, the punkin/differential are driverside. If you can't mount the transfer case to work with the current front axle you will have to swap out the front axle as well.

A common Toyota mini truck swap is the Volkswagen diesel from a jetta. I don't know too much about it other than it is a smaller, capable engine, that would be about the right size for a Cherokee.
